It's year 10 mock exam week at my school, and probably around the country. As a teenager, I understand the kind of pressure other teenagers are put under. Luckily, my parents have always been supportive and never say anything like "Oh, well it's only a mock!" They're being super supportive and I'm sure many other parents around the country are too. However, I'm sure that there are many parents who couldn't care less what their children get in the exams, and I suppose, that in itself is pressure to prove them wrong. To prove to them that you can do well.
Also, I'm sure there are lots of pupils thinking that because the exams are called mocks, they don't matter.
MOCKS MATTER.
Your mock grade is what will be seen by colleges and 6th forms. It's all very well saying that you'll revise for the real exam, but the grade you get in those won't have an effect on whether or not you're accepted at your first choice of college/6th form. The year 11 exams, that are taken in May/June, aren't marked until the summer holidays, so you get your results back in August. August is too late to apply for a course at college...
And, if you revise for the mocks, it makes it a lot easier to revise for the "real" ones later on.
Anyway, back to the topic in hand.
Stress.
Everyone gets stressed before exams, unless you're a cocky whatsit. Even smart people, who don't even need to do revision (but they do anyway), get stressed. Admittedly, some people show it more than others, for example; there's a boy in my year and he was literally in tears just before we went into the exam, whereas there are other.. Ahem.. People who jump around and make loads of noise, acting as if it's just a normal lesson.
Getting stressed about important things like exams is understandable, but you need to know how to calm your nerves, and chill out because, if not, you'll get into the exam hall, take your seat... And freak out.
I'm going to share with you gorgeous people my top tips for keeping cool.
1. Make sure you revise. That way you know you're prepared and, chances are, anything that comes up in the exam you'll have covered at least twice.
2. DO NOT cram the night before. If you try and revise all night before an exam, you'll stress yourself out even more. You'll be trying to go to sleep but your mind will still be working away at those simultaneous equations.
3. Try and relax the night before. Don't think about the exam you have in the morning, just chill out and get a good nights sleep. Being well rested is just as important as revising. If you go into the exam tired and headachey, your mood will be reflected in your grade.
4. Make sure you eat breakfast on the morning of an exam. Some exams run through lunch, so if you're hungry you're not going to be able to concentrate on what the definition of hyperbole is, you're just going to be thinking about what you're going to have for lunch.
5. Take water into the exam with you. Research has been done to investigate the benefits of drinking water in an exam. Results show that your brain will work better when hydrated.
And that's it my lovelies! Not very much to remember, really.
Please note that this is only what works for me, I'm not an exam therapist, I've just decided to share my wisdom.
I hope this has helped!
